Fighting with Help: Best Supplements for Attacking Dementia

January 2, 2019 by Seasons Staff

Every three seconds, someone in the world develops dementia. By 2030, it is estimated that more than 75 million people will suffer from this debilitating disease.

Dementia doesn’t only affect the person who suffers from it, but everyone they know, as it slowly robs their mind of all memories, leaving them confused, anxious and frustrated. It’s an unfair and scary disease for those going through it, as well as those who love them. Not only will they need extra care at this time, but also compassion as they live through this disease.

While technology and innovation have helped in some ways, there’s still no cure for dementia. There are some scientists who believe certain supplements, vitamins and minerals can be beneficial for those with dementia and may even help them fight off this disease.

If you are interested in learning more, keep reading. Here you can read about some of the most popular supplements for dementia.

Vitamins E and C

People who eat a diet rich in vitamins C and E have a significantly lower risk of developing dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Also, these vitamins are often low in those with dementia.

For those who are still in the early stages of this disease, studies have shown a daily Vitamin E supplement can help slow down the disease’s progression. Also, by taking 400 to 800 IU of vitamin E daily, older adults can help protect themselves from developing dementia.

Zinc

The majority of the elderly population in the United States is actually deficient in zinc. When these individuals take a supplement, it can help to improve their cognitive functioning, as well as their memory.

It is recommended that a person take 30 to 40 grams of zinc per day to help improve their brain function if they suffer from dementia.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Taking 4000 mg of combined EPA and DHA on a daily basis can help with cases of dementia. How? Omega-3s can help to prevent brain cell damage and will reduce the risk of developing this disease because it can help control chronic inflammation.

Some food sources of Omega-3 include wild Pacific salmon and free-range eggs.

Panax Ginseng

This type of herb has been proven to have several benefits for those who suffer from dementia. In fact, research has shown that people suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s who have taken the Panax ginseng root on a daily basis for 12 weeks had improved mental performance.

Folic Acid and Vitamin B12

Many people who suffer from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are deficient in folic acid and Vitamin B12. These two supplements can help lower the overall levels of a certain amino acid in the blood that is typically linked to dementia.

Experts recommend 400 mcg to 1,000 mcg of folic acid and 100 mcg to 1,000 mcg of vitamin B12 each day to see any memory benefits.

Curcumin

This is considered a powerful antioxidant extract that is derived from the turmeric spice. Its been hailed as one of the most powerful, natural elements that can help protect brain health.

It is a potent anti-inflammatory agent that benefits the entire body. Curcumin can also help to boost overall cognitive function. Recently, it has also been proven effective as an antidepressant.

If someone wants to use this supplement, they need to make sure they purchase the natural, BCM95 type. Other brands use synthetic curcumin, which is derived from various petrochemicals, and won’t provide the same benefits.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a healthy type of fat that will nourish the brain. Some have even claimed that it reverses the effects of dementia and Alzheimer’s symptoms.

The makeup of coconut oil is approximately 66 percent MCT, which contain ketoacids that help to nourish and regenerate diseased brain cells. In addition to helping with cases of dementia and Alzheimer’s, coconut oil may also be beneficial for individuals suffering with ALS, MS and Parkinson’s disease.

Phosphatidylserine

While this is a big word, it’s a vitamin that can also have a big impact on the treatment of dementia symptoms. Phosphatidylserine is a compound that occurs naturally in the brain and works by boosting the levels of some chemicals. These are the chemicals that help to retail and process memories.

You will find different types of phosphatidylserine supplements available. Take note, the ones derived from plant sources are not as effective as the ones created from bovine brain phospholipids.

Ginkgo Biloba Extract

When you begin thinking of ginkgo, repeat the mantra, “no ginkgo, no thinko.” While it may sound silly, it’s got quite a bit of truth to it.

The extract, which is from the ginkgo tree, helps to increase the blood flow to the brain. It’s beneficial in preventing and reducing the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Supplements for Dementia: You Don’t Have to Fight Alone

As you can see, there are several supplements for dementia that may be beneficial in fighting this disease. Not only can they help those who have already been diagnosed, but also help prevent the condition from striking others.

If you have a loved one who is suffering from dementia, then looking into these supplements may be a good idea. It may also be beneficial to look into memory care to ensure they have the highest quality of life possible.
